If the pressure on Lionel Messi to lead Barcelona wasn’t heavy enough,
it’s increased drastically over the course of the past few weeks.
First, Neymar left for Paris Saint-Germain. Then, Luis Suarez was
sidelined for a few weeks after sustaining a knee injury in the Spanish
Super Cup.
The sight of Messi lining up alongside Gerard Deulofeu and Sergi
Roberto in Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Alaves on Saturday was downright
strange. He must wonder what he’s done to be in such a position.
Thankfully for the Argentinian, he’ll be able to spend the entire
week building up a relationship with Ousmane Dembele, who arrived this
week in a £135.5 million move from Borussia Dortmund.
And Barcelona said in a statement
that Suarez, who has joined up with the Uruguay squad for their World
Cup qualifiers, is “recovering favourably” from his injury.
Messi's impressive 20 second moment
He scored again in the 66th minute but it was what he did in the
final seconds of the match that really speaks volumes about Messi’s
talent.
In the second minute of injury time, Messi sprinted back to chase an
Alaves counter-attack before helping Sergio Busquets retrieve possession
in Barcelona’s half.
He then advanced forward, played a perfect pass to the right flank
and watched as Barcelona came incredibly close to making it 3-0.
So in under 20 seconds we witnessed Messi’s work rate and ability to spring attacks.
