Lionel Messi Honored With New 85-Foot Statue That Surpasses India’s Dismantled Tribute

Lionel Messi is no stranger to larger-than-life tributes. But as the Argentina icon turns 39 on today 24th Of June 2026, fans have once again raised the bar for celebrating his legacy.

Just days after Messi etched his name deeper into World Cup history—scoring his 17th and 18th tournament goals to surpass Miroslav Klose’s all-time record in a 2-0 win over Austria—Patagonia paid him back in steel and scale.

In Cutral Có, a remote town in Argentina’s Patagonia region, local artists unveiled an 85-foot, 70-ton steel statue of the World Cup champion. While the likeness has sparked debate, the sheer scale of the monument leaves little room for doubt about the town’s admiration.

It isn’t Messi’s first encounter with oversized tributes. Last December, during Inter Miami’s “GOAT Tour” of India alongside Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul, Kolkata, West Bengal built a 70-foot statue that was briefly hailed as the world’s largest footballer sculpture. Built in just 27 days, it was later ordered removed after authorities deemed it structurally unsafe. West Bengal legislator Sharadwat Mukherjee noted the statue was “swaying in the wind,” prompting plans to reassemble it at a safer location.

Now, with this new 85-foot monument standing closer to home, Messi’s legacy continues to grow—one record, one milestone, and one statue at a time.
