Tottenham youngster Anton Walkes opens up on playing under Lionel Messi's former manager Gerardo Martino

Gerardo Martino coached Lionel Messi during his time in charge of Barcelona and played a key role in Tottenham Hotspur's Anton Walkes' development.

Tottenham loanee Anton Walkes sat down for an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, and raved about the time he spent on loan in America with Atlanta United, highlighting how much he learned playing under Gerardo Martino. The 21-year-old is currently plying his trade in League One on loan with Portsmouth, as he continues his education in the game.
The current Spurs squad is incredibly strong at the moment in every department - something that has made it extremely difficult for young players to force their way into the first-team.Walkes spoke exclusively to Sky Sports about his progression and development as a footballer, and highlighted the time he spent playing under Martino in America as a real learning curve for him:

"He knows his business. This is a guy who has coached the world's best player in Leo Messi. You have to give double respect to someone like that."
The 21-year-old defender has made eight appearances for Pompey, since moving to Fratton Park in January.Walkes is a right-back by trade, but can play anywhere along the back-line, as well as in the deep-lying midfield role, and that kind of versatility could prove to be vital to his chances of earning a place in the Tottenham first-team squad over the course of the next year or so.
