FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is the best player ever to have played in La Liga, according to a new study.
The Argentine, who has been plying his trade in Spain's top division
since 2004, has been declared the best player to have ever played in La
Liga, according to the Research Centre of History and Statistics of
Spanish Football (CIHEFE).The study, which works on a points system, looked at factors such as minutes played each season, goals scored from open play, penalty goals, own goals, as well as red cards.
"All of the evaluation criteria are marked with a simple and homogeneous scoring system that manages to evaluate all of the players with the same analysis in each season," researcher Jose Antonio Ortega said, according to Marca.
The study showed that Messi sits on 545 points, above Real Madrid legends Raul Gonzalez, who was ranked at second on 528 points, and Cesar Rodriguez, who was in at third place on 524 points.
The report claimed that the Argentine is also atop of the standings due his La Liga goal tally of 349 strikes – a record not many players have come close to. Ortega also stated that his research found that Messi is one of the most valuable players of all time.
